White Is The Colour of Lovers

The white colour of petals
Is the colour of lovers.
The nostalgic white lily
Is the colour of lovers.

The white colour of the petals
Of the lily that blooms
In the footsteps of the one
Of the one that I love
In the place where I grew up,
Is the colour of lovers.

The clear colour of the blue sky
Is the colour of first love.
As beautiful as the sky is endless,
The colour of first love.

The clear colour of the blue sky
Of that time when first I stood
Shoulder to shoulder with the one
With the one that I love
In the place where I grew up,
Is the colour of first love.

The red colour of the sunset
Is the colour of memories.
Trembling and flickering through tears,
The colour of memories.

The red colour of the sunset
Reflected in the moistened eyes
Of the one, of the one that I love
In the place where I grew up,
Is the colour of memories.

  1. I suppose this must be a traditional song. Anyway, it appears to have been knocking around for a while. My favourite version is the Petty Booka version, which was also the first I heard. I don’t know who the sixties-looking girls are. They look almost as if they’ve escaped from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie or something. I suppose I should look them up on Wikipedia.

  2. Well, they don’t seem to be on Wikipedia, but I have found the following:http://www.betsyko.com/bandc.htmlhttp://jsound.blogsome.com/2007/06/02/betsy-chris/Betsy Curtis and Chris Rolseth were part of the Kaillua High-School Madrigals who toured Japan singing Hawaiian folk songs in the late 1960s under the direction of Shigeru Hotoke. While they were there, Denon Columbia Japan were so impressed by the girls that they offered them a record deal singing Japanese folk music.

In 1970 they released the beautiful folk song Shiroi Iro Wa Koi Bito No Iro (a.k.a. Colors of Love) which was written by the Japanese songwriter Kazuhiko Kato. The song was a huge hit and it quickly made Betsy & Chris one of the most popular singing duos in Japan.
