I was talking to someone the other day about how there isn't really any 'road trip' culture in Britain like there is in America. "Surely that's not true," came the response. "Well, it is quite a small country. After a day any kind of road trip is over, because you've already got where you're going."
A song has been written about Route 66. A less famous song has been written about the A303, but it's not quite the same, somehow (incidentally, I have hitch-hiked down the A303).
I wracked my brains to think what the British equivalent to road trip culture might be. And then, today, in a flash of inspiration, it came to me:
America has On the Road…
But we have On the Buses.
Not great sound quality, but it’s there:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PYZu5e1LAgHere's the A303 song, too:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5g8qlIDUVII should probably put links on the actual blog post, I suppose.
Those lyrics are excellent. I’ll have to check and see if that’s on Youtube now.

I wasn’t aware of the A303 song but Billy Bragg anglicized the lyrics of Route 66 to turn it into the A13. http://www.billybragg.co.uk/releases/miscellaneous/a13.html
