  1. Though I still like “Stairway to Heaven” a lot, I guess it is just a choice of those following the well-throdden paths. My favourite Zeppelin song is “Battle of Evermore”.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4oUJUCDX1s&fmt=18I must say I was surprised to hear the posted one, it made me think of those cliché matic shown square dance evenings that find place in the Mid West. They sound rather American there, no offense intented.I was just glad to discover British singing and sounding bands and singers that represented some quality, amongst the massive wave of American music, that broke down on our shores.

  2. Actually, The Battle of Evermore is an excellent track. Used to send shivers down my spine, that one. I was talking to someone (Mr. Wu) about Led Zep recently (in relation to the blues), and he told me of some BBC recorded session in which they played… I forget which song now. But at one point Robert Plant apparently wails, “I’ve got those West Bromwich blues.”Poignant words.

  3. I think the interesting thing is the combination of influences. Actually, I’m glad you brought this up or I might have forgotten something I was thinking about the other day. I was listening to Skip James and for some reason I was getting lots of Tolkien imagery. How are Tolkien and the blues connected? I asked myself. Well, at the very least, they are connected through Led Zeppelin, I thought.I know Robert Plant is a bit embarrassed about some of his lyrics now, especially references to Mordor and so on, but they are precisely the kind of self-indulgence that rock and pop are all about. (I think.) Anyway, I think the combination of Anglo-Saxon lore and American blues that they used worked surprisingly well.

  4. That it did, for sure.I do like the references in the lyrics, too. And like you pointed out, Tolkien is never far. I’m nosed into Gaelic lore myself, but they do overlap, numerous times. An amazing fact as well, so I thought.

  5. Quite frankly, after giving it some thought, I am surprised that Robert Plant is embarrassed about those lyrics.I think lore, myths and legends have a high rock and roll potential, and Tolkien’s trilogy is a great work, without a doubt.Apart from that, they are closer to us than any decetralised religion can ever be.I know, I’ve seen the dwarf and the wee people myself.

  6. Yeah, I think his embarrassment is unnecessary. I don’t know what his reasons are. I could guess, but that would perhaps be pointless.I like the lyrics to The Battle of Evermore, too.
