Going Home

It seems that Dory Previn died recently. Some people get a lot of fuss when they die, some people not so much. Apparently she died on Tuesday, as I have only just discovered. I never owned a Dory Previn album, but her music was, to me, very much part of the houses (there were, sequentially speaking, more than one) in which I grew up. Therefore, her music, along with Pink Floyd, Ian Dury, David Bowie, John Denver and a number of others, was part of my experience of music before I became very self-conscious about personal tastes as a teenager. I think I always appreciated the sadness of her songs, which was restrained and wildly bitter at the same time. They have had the same effect, and meant the same thing to me, listening as an adult, as I remember them having when I listened as a child. This, what might be called 'transparent' directness is rare. There are very few people who can put as much combined feeling and intelligence into a song as Dory Previn. I wish there were more, but the fact is, there are not. You're not going to find many like this around, maybe none now.

I think she’s fairly distinct. There have been other women with guitars who’ve done intelligent, plangent ballads, EG, Joni Mitchell. Dory Previn doesn’t seem to be as well known as Joni, but I’m not sure why.
